Save 16th Avenue in Vancouver, BC
(from 10 buses per hour, 6 am to 10pm !) Join fellow residents as we address our concerns with representatives from Translink and the City of Vancouver. Wednesday, June 25th, 7:00pm Canadian Memorial Church, 1825 West 16th Avenue (16th and Burrard) Translink is about to introduce bus service down 16th Avenue from Cambie Street to UBC, from 6 am to 10 pm everyday. That is likely to mean considerable noise and window rattling, particularly in the early morning and late at night, as well as reduced parking, severe trimming or removal of the Cherry trees and destruction of our residential neighborhood. The time to act is NOW! We all consider ourselves "green". We appreciate that having more buses could theoretically mean having fewer cars, and that would be good. But the new number 33 line down 16th Avenue is being railroaded through as the brainchild of Translink without public support. It was touted in the 2005 Transit Plan as the "sixth highest potential route to convert single-occupant vehicles to transit" but they failed to say that there were only six routes proposed. The Transit Plan that was ultimately approved by City Council was based on false pretences, and even the public consultation data was miscontrued to lend additional unfounded support to the new line. (The market research question asked, "How often would you consider using this new service, X times per week or per month?" The average response from those who would have considered using the service was 1.6 times per week or per month, but was presented to City Hall as 1.6 times per week.) 16th Avenue was proposed as a new line to improve access to and from UBC, currently served by the number 99 and number 25 lines, as well as several other routes from areas farther north and south. 16th Avenue was proposed as a way of dealing with congestion on these two lines, as well as congestion on Broadway. However, there are several new strategies being implemented to improve these issues - articulated (longer) buses, loading and unloading from all doors, electronic fare card readers, and dedicated bus lanes, among other strategies. And these are being implemented despite the current ridership rating these lines overall as "good".
